Monarch / Garfield:  This historic townsite is a huddle of chalets and mountain cabins, and is the gateway to Monarch Mountain ski area.  Walk to the Monarch Lodge for a meal or hot tub soak.  You’re five miles from the lifts at Monarch and 18 miles from Salida.

Howard: A scenic 13-mile drive east of Salida through Big Horn Sheep Canyon, Howard flanks the Arkansas
